Midterm elections play a crucial role in shaping the direction of our government and the laws that affect everyday life. Held halfway through a president's four-year term, these elections determine who will represent citizens in the entire U.S. House of Representatives and a significant portion of the U.S. Senate, as well as many state and local offices, giving voters the power to influence which party controls Congress and state leadership. In 2026, 36 states will also hold gubernatorial races, making this cycle particularly consequential at the state level. Governors shape state policy, control executive budgets, and play a direct role in decisions that affect communities on issues ranging from housing and education to immigration and civil rights. By voting in midterms, the people have the power to express approval or disapproval of the current administration's performance, create checks and balances on presidential power, and impact key policy decisions on issues like the economy, healthcare, and civil rights. Knowing how to identify and avoid misinformation is a civic survival skill. False information about immigration policy, voting rights, and community safety spreads faster than corrections, and the consequences fall hardest on communities that are already navigating uncertainty.
This election will decide the course the Nation and our State will take for the next two or more years. All 435 House seats 13 of which are Michigan's, 35 out of 100 Senate seats are up this year one of which is Michigan's.
